Dreamhost .snapshot saves the day

For the second time since I started using Dreamhost[1] I was “saved” by their .snapshot directory yesterday. I was upgrading my G2-install to the latest version, and ran into problems I couldn’t easily fix. So I just copied the most recent hourly backup from .snapshot/hourly.0/ and everything was fine again.

If you’re a Dreamhost customer and didn’t know about the .snapshot directory, it’s available from your root folder. It won’t show up in any directory listing or auto-complete, so just change directory to .snapshot. Example if you’re logged on via SSH:

cd /home/username/.snapshot/

Oh, and while we’re on the topic of webhosts, Dreamhost went crazy again and upped the storage and bandwidth limits. On signup you now get 200 GB disk space, which increases weekly with 1 GB, and 2 TB bandwidth, which increases weekly with 16 GB. Obviously this is way beyond what Dreamhost has capacity for, considering they have to have several backups of all data, but as long as they can provide a stable service I’m happy as a kite, since I can now have an online backup of all my photos and other non-sensitive files. Details about the Dreamhost offers here: dreamhost.com/hosting.html.
