First month

It has almost been a month since I moved to Tromsø now, and things haven’t exactly been dull around here.

At work, things have been hectic, but fun. I have setup my Dual 2.3GHz G5 with 2.5GB RAM and a 23″ Cinema Display with all the software I need, and have started working on several interesting projects. Tim has been blogging a bit about switching from Windows to Mac, and I think we agree that we won’t be switching back any time soon. With MAMP running for local development, BBEdit for editing, Transmit for FTP transfers, andOpera for browsing, I’m a happy camper!

Yesterday we went to dinner at Biffhuset (“the steak house”) with Markus and Cecilie, and had a really good time. Food was fantastic, the most tender steak you can imagine, and the wine matched the meal perfectly. The garlic-marinated prawns I had first didn’t ruin the impression either. This was actually our first night out since we moved here, and it felt really good to do something other than work and fix the apartment for once.

Our apartment is finally starting to shape up, and it feels like a home now, rather than just a storage room for boxes that we just happen to live amongst. We even have a guest bedroom setup now *hint, hint*

We also have a “new” car now, after my mum gave me her old car, a 17 year old Volkswagen Golf named Gunda. She has a heart of gold, but the rest of her is kinda tired and old, so I feel that saying she has “soul” is an understatement. Since I’m going to work by bus, we don’t really need a new car yet, so we’ll keep Gunda as long as she wakes up when asked nicely, and takes us where we want to go in a close-to-safe way.

Speaking of buses, I’ve discovered that commuting isn’t necessarily as bad as I thought it would be. Instead of spending a total of 40 minutes going to and from work being bored, I have decided to start reading. I usually get through two chapters each day, currently reading Phillip Pullman – The Golden Compass.

Next week or maybe the week after I will introduce a guest blogger. He’s young, hairy, and exceptionally cute. I’ll post some pictures as well, just to clear up any potential misunderstandings and weird images that last sentence may have created…

Go ahead, just make the switch, you won\’t regret it! :)

So any suggestions what I should buy? I don\’t want a too expensive system to start with, I was thinking of a Mini Intel duo system, what do you think ot that one? Is it good?

  4. 4 Tim Posted April 28th, 2006 - 06:43

Yeah, a Mac Mini is a good, inexpensive way to join the Mac revolution. Keep in mind that you\’ll probably want at least a GB of RAM.

Then I think I have to buy one :-) We got a special discount offer on all Apple products since I work for Nokia :-)

Lucky b*****d ;) \r\n\r\nAs Tim says, the Mini is probably fine, unless you\’re doing heavy operations like video editing and stuff.

hehe :-) It\’s not that much money but it\’s a bit cheaper so I think I will buy one now. Cool thats what I was think as well, I will not do any heavy video editing or anything like that, and it\’s not as expensive as other Apple systems, so it looks like a good entry system :-)

Go for it! :) And let me know if you find some good software and tools :)

It was a bold decision to move north. I\’ve visited Tromsø last summer. Beautiful town, but where from do you commute 40 mins? I thought it is possible to walk through Tromsø in this time :)

Hehe, the city itself isn\’t too big, that\’s for sure :) I live in Tromsdalen, which is on the mainland, so it takes me about 20 minutes each way by bus. I could drive, but it costs 80 NOK per day to park in the parkinghouse inside the mountain :( \r\n\r\nI live in the area where it says \”Gammelgården\” on this map: http://maps.google.com/maps?f=q&hl=en&q=troms%C3%B8,+norway&om=1

Parking in Norway… This is a painful subject for me (I guess also for Daniel :) It is pretty much the only country where I ever got a parking ticket.

Gahh! Don\’t talk to me about parking in Norway. Norway is evil when it comes to parking :-)
