Stereotypes

Ever seen the gay men on Ricki Lake?

Have you ever seen the gay men on Ricki Lake show? I have always considered those guys to be corner-cases who are just acting out their insecurities through lots of make-up and feminine behaviour… Well, yesterday afternoon I went shopping with Marianne, and she dragged me into The Makeup Store in Bogstadveien.

Inside the store, I expected to see lots of makeup and lots of women. What I didn’t expect was the two guys that were in the store when we entered. Let me try to describe them:
They were both wearing normal pants/jeans, tight see-through acrylic-like shirts with nothing under, they both had really bleached hair, PLENTY of makeup, and were talking in a Michael Jackson-like childish voice. I was so fascinated with their behaviour that I found myself staring at them while they were running around the store like kids in a candy-store (or a geek in a computer-store).

The thing I’m wondering about now is; was that their natural behaviour? I reallize that the clothing and makeup is part of making a point or showing the world their sexuality or something else I don’t understand, but the whole feminine act…? Honestly I always thought this was just an american phenomenon that would occasionally occur on Ricki Lake, but now I’m not so sure…

I don’t think there’s a gay gene, so something tells me it’s just a show…

Those g(u)(a)ys as so much fun – but I must admit I share your confusion. Is it natural, or are they faking it? I guess that\’s one of the big questions of life.
