Things are looking better after a poor start of the holiday…
After a rather disappointing start of the vacation, we’re now settling in and are really enjoying ourselves!
We arrived at Palma airport friday June 18, around 21:30. After standing in line for a good hour (first to get out of the plane, then to get to the area where we could get our suitcases, then to get our suitcases, then to get directions to the bus and which hotel we were going to stay in), then driving a bus with an insane driver for an hour, then waiting 15 minutes to get the key to our room, we were finally on our way to the bedroom around 23:30. The hotel we’re staying in is the Mimosa in Cala Bona.
The first impression of the room was not good. It had a view of anything but ocean, it was close to the main road next to the hotel, and it was small and quite shabby. Tired from travelling and unhappy with our room we decided to go out to find something to eat at a nice restaurant. After walking for 15 minutes we thought we had seen the entire town, and not a single restaurant that looked any good was open. Back to the hotel and going to bed hungry…
We woke up 08:30 on saturday from the sound of a bus standing right outside our room picking up people who were going home to Sweden, Norway, Denmark or Germany (most of the people here are of those nationalities). Still quite upset with our impressions from the night before, we got out of bed and went to the Resort Service to complain. Their answer: sorry, every hotel on the entire island is full, so there’s nothing we can do.
At this point we decided that there’s not much we can do except make the best of things. So we went back to the room (a room that for some reason looked a lot better now that it was inhabited and had some clothes spread around etc) and changed into our bathing gear. The weather wasn’t too good, but we went down to the pool outside the hotel and got some good spots there. After about an hour or so, the sun peeked out from behind the clouds, and we got some nice hours in the sun, working on a tan (in my case trying to avoid the lobster-look) and swimming in the pool now and then to cool down (yet another attempt to maintain a colour that’s not on the red side of the colorwheel).
Lunch that day was chicken enchilladas (I think that’s what we had) and they were really tasty! In the afternoon we decided to give the town another go, hoping to discover something we hadn’t seen the first night. At first, we thought we had walked in the wrong direction, and I suspected there had been a glitch in the Matrix, because we almost didn’t recognize the town from the night before. There were now people everywhere, the restaurants suddenly seemed much more tempting, and the weather was niceer. After walking for about fifteen minutes we also got a glimpse of the beach at Cala Millor, the neighbouring town, and it was a million times better than the sorry excuse for a beach we have next to our hotel.
As you probably understand, things are looking much better than we had feared after the first night, and we’re really having a great time. The weather today has been ok, we’ve spent the day looking around the town and the area and sunbathing a bit. Tomorrow we’re going to rent a car (partly because yours truly failed in the attempts to avoid being sunburned) and drive around Mallorca. We’re definitely going to the northeast parts of the island, Formentero. Other than that we don’t know, we’ll just drive around and see if we find something interesting, a nice secluded beach or a nice restaurant in some small town..
All in all, we’re very happy with how things are here, and the weather forecast for next week is SUN SUN SUN!! Viva Mallorca!
