Icelandic movie night

Another great movie night!

I just came home from a great evening at Gerdur’s place, Icelandic movie night! We’re trying to have a movie night with movies and food from different contries once in a while, the first was Divisha’s Bollywood night, and this time it was Iceland’s turn.

We watched two movies, first Djöflaeyjan which was a great portrayal of the lives of lower class people living in barracks that were left behind by the US Army after WW2. The second movie was 101 Reykjavik, which is more of a comedy about, well, complicated relations… veeeeery complicated. Also a great movie!

We were served some Icelandic specialities, brauðterta with loafs of bread, majo, shrimps, tomato, egg, cucumber and probably something else that I’ve forgotten.. for dessert we had chocolate cake – mmmmmmmmmmmm… Oh, I almost forgot (as if I could ever forget), me, Øyvind Sr. and Alex tried an Icelandic snack that tasted like nothing I’ve ever tasted before, and to be honest – hopefully will never taste again. The name was hákarl, which is basically rotten shark! At least now I can say that I’ve tried it, and as Øyvind said: “you should do one thing every day that scares you”. Let me tell you, that shark was scary! Probably even scarier than it was alive!

All jokes about sharks aside, many thanks to Gerður for working day and night to prepare the evening for us! *trying to think of a really foul-tasting Norwegian specialty to serve at the Norwegian movie night*
