Bollywood

My first Bollywood experience.

Yesterday I watched my first Bollywood movie. Me, John, Øyvind Sr., Øyvind Jr., Alex, Gerdur, Daniel and Ivan were invited to Divisha and Sagar to watch “Kal Ho Naa Ho“, which roughly translates to “if tomorrow never comes”.

The movie was actually surprisingly good. It’s not like any movie I’ve seen before, so it took some time to get used to it, but all in all, I really enjoyed it. The movie is best described as a drama/musical/love story, and I must admit that it had it’s flaws, but as my first Bollywood movie, I was quite impressed and it deserves a 4 on the dice.

In India, there are two interesting traditions related to going to the cinema. First of all, people get up and dance when the “musical acts” in the movie occur. When you hear about this, it might sound weird, but the music was actually quite catchy! Not that any of us did any attempts to follow this tradition (well, for a while we thought Øyvind Jr. did, but it turned out he was just running to steal Alex’s place in the “meditation chair”), but if we had been at an Indian theatre, who knows… the other thing is that they serve soup. I know, for us norwegians who are used to popcorn being the closest we come to food at a theatre, it sounds weird, but the idea is actually quite good! The movies usually last more than three hours, so it might also be a necessity for some people.

Now, Indian food is spicy, everyone knows that. I like Indian food, but I usually order it mild or medium spicy, because I’m sensitive to hot food. This sensitivity became painfully clear to me yesterday, because the soup was – in lack of a better word: “hot-enough-to-clear-your-sinuses-hot” (at least it was to me, everyone else seemed to be ok)! Not that it didn’t taste good, because it really did, but when my lips and my tounge felt like they were about to start melting, I had to give up. I threw down a couple of Tyrkisk Peber just to dampen the burning sensation. Oh, and just so I won’t get told off at lunch when I come home from vacation, I really did like the food, and I would have finished it if my mouth would have stopped burning!

Conclusion: good movie, I definitely recommend seing it, and the food was really good – especially the rice/chili/bean-doughnuts with the peanut-sauce on!
